Make sure that you work with an editor who understands that there are four types of editing and each one needs to be addressed:  structural, stylistic, copy editing and proofreading.  In traditional publishing houses, there are four different editors who review your book.  In the regular world, most authors attempt to do their best with their manuscript and then take it to an editor who will advise what type of editing is needed.  A good friend with an honours degree in English does not necessarily a great editor make! The following service providers have been recommended by authors at Direct From The Author. Click on the links below to find out more about the types of editing they do.

Born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon, after high school I moved to Calgary to complete my Bachelor of Arts in Canadian History at the University of Calgary. We moved to the Coldstream area in August of 2014 and have never looked back! After our move, I completed the Editing Certificate Program through Simon Fraser University and created Clearly Read Editing.

I am passionate about making documents as successful as possible through clear, purposeful writing and I offer a variety of editing services to suit any author’s needs including, structural editing; copy editing; proofreading; technical writing and editing; business writing and editing; and plain language writing.

Whether you need your latest novel reviewed for errors, a business document formalized, or a technical manual checked for consistency, I can help your work stand out. Written communication is the way of the world today, make sure your text says what you want it to say!

Maylon Gardner
Kelowna, BC Canada

I am a creative editor with particular skill in maintaining author voice. I believe it is an editor’s main duty to ensure that no amount of editing ever overrides an author’s intention through grammatical sanitizing. I focus on correcting the flow and content of a piece so that the author’s story can touch as many people as possible. My motto reflects this: you write it, I right it.

I have a double HBA in English and Comparative Literature and Culture, as well as a Publishing Certificate from Ryerson University that focused on editing and proofreading. My editing experience includes novels, brochures, websites, articles, PDFs, and more, tailored to the needs of each particular client.

I provide the full editorial spectrum. This includes manuscript assessments (outlining strengths and weaknesses in the document and some suggestions for correction), copy editing, line or style editing, substantive editing, and developmental (sometimes called content) editing.

Services can be completed at an hourly or fixed rate, based on the author’s needs and length of manuscript. Contact me for further details on pricing at maylon.gardner@gmail.com.
